In my trekking days in Sahyadri I met warli artist in their small hutments.and learnt a lt about the rituals and stories in Warli paintings, it was not only dayto day life that they dipicted but there were many otherthings. The CornMother(earth Mother) , they worshipped as the crop was ready ,was picturised in the Chauck and installed inside the hut The Goddess thus blessed the home and only with her blessings a marriage cld take place. Also there were numerous stories sbout husbsnd snd wife their fights etc .all woven around the forest life in Sayadri .
AS the artist created these wonderful stories , I started work-shops where artist wld paint and I wld explain since they are too shy to express themselves.Once my venture took me to university in London . and with a dozen English and Greek school teachers we made amud smeared patch on paper and learnt to paint with fine brush and white colours the figures of Warli and the forest trees animals ,birds .It was a work-shop they immencely enjoyed and in the summery the Host teacher , praised the Indian civilzation which worshipped Nature to thisday . As I sat there under huge trees , to my mind came the picture of how we, Worship????our Nature .
Inspite of having a culture of worshipping Nature we have abused our Forest , our plants and trees , our rivers and springs ,our lakes .Even today I see in Mumbai perfectly respectable? old men and women robbing the flowers from public garden daily , throwing garbage in sea the list is endless .Look at our shrines , when will we wake up , or we will immerge ourself in that Dhol , which makes you numb to all the surroundings????
Let the Dhol wake us up to clean up our surroundings and letus worship Earth Mother in her true form .
